Harry Howe, professor of accounting in ��ɫ����’s School of Business, is among the latest cohort of 13 faculty members the State University of New York Board of Trustees has named to a distinguished professorship.

The board appointed Howe as a distinguished teaching professor at its November meeting. The distinguished rank recognizes and honors mastery of teaching. Candidates must have demonstrated consistently superior mastery of teaching, outstanding service to students, and commitment to their ongoing intellectual growth; scholarship and professional development; and adherence to rigorous academic standards and requirements.

The board of trustees’ resolution noted that Howe creates a highly interactive classroom setting where students develop essential proficiencies for their future profession. They also recognized him for his student-centered pedagogical approach, constant improvement of student outcomes, and extensive student support and mentorship that has fostered beneficial relationships with alumni, who support students through guest lectures, networking, and internships.

Howe joined ��ɫ����’s faculty in 1995. He teaches Intermediate Financial Accounting, Accounting Theory and Research, and a variety of electives, including Financial Statement Analysis. He is the director of ��ɫ����’s M.S. accounting program and accounting coordinator. Howe serves as faculty advisor to the Accounting Society and ��ɫ����’s CFA Research Challenge team and is actively involved in many student co-curricular activities. 

Howe holds or has held positions in dozens of college- and campus-wide committees and programs. He serves on the boards of the Rochester FEI (Financial Executives International) and NYSSCPA (New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants), the latter for which he serves as chair of the chapter’s annual World of Accounting event. Howe is also a past president of the Northeast Region of the American Accounting Association.

Howe’s research interests lie in the areas of business valuations and the development of applied instructional material for students and practitioners. He has published two book-length monographs and authored or co-authored papers in journals that include Issues in Accounting Education, The Journal of Accounting Education, The Journal of Legal Economics, The Journal of Business Valuation and Economic Loss Analysis, and The CPA Journal. Howe earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and an M.B.A. and Ph.D. from Union College.
